Senator Warns New Grad Unemployment Could Hit 35% in Two Years—and Says AI CEOs Are Deliberately Downplaying It

At a high-profile Washington policy forum on Tuesday, Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, dropped a prediction that rippled through the room: new college graduate unemployment, currently sitting at 5.6%, is heading toward 30 to 35 percent—and he believes the CEOs of the companies building AI know it, but are deliberately pulling their punches in public.

The Accusation: Conscious Soft-Pedaling
What made Warner's remarks particularly sharp was his direct accusation that the AI industry's most prominent evangelists are intentionally muting their own forecasts. Speaking at the Hill and Valley Forum—a conference bringing together Washington policymakers and Silicon Valley executives—Warner called out Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman by name:

The charge isn't without evidence. Amodei made headlines in May 2025 when he warned AI could wipe out 50% of entry-level office jobs—a statement he has since walked back considerably. His January 2026 essay described "unusually painful" disruption without specifying scale. Altman, meanwhile, recently told press that companies are using AI as a scapegoat for layoffs that were already planned—an inversion that arguably serves to minimize the technology's true labor market impact.
A Different Kind of Disruption
Warner was careful to note he isn't anti-AI—he framed his warning as coming from "a pro-AI, pro-tech guy." His concern is that the disruption coming is categorically different from past technological transitions:
"If we go way back in time, like three or four years ago, we would have said the policy prescription is, 'let's make everybody learn how to code.' At least that was well intentioned, but completely the wrong answer."
The key distinction, Warner argued, is that AI automation primarily threatens white-collar work—the knowledge economy jobs that college graduates have been trained to fill. Software engineering, HR, legal research, financial analysis, content creation: these are precisely the domains where AI tools like Anthropic's Claude have already demonstrated significant capability gains. Unlike the factory automation of the 20th century, there is no obvious adjacent sector for displaced college graduates to pivot into.
The Policy Gap
Warner has been consistently critical of the Trump administration's approach to AI governance. Last week, he blasted the White House's legislative framework on AI, saying it "lacks significant substance." He specifically called out the administration for shutting down the Senate Intelligence Committee's bill on national security threats from advanced AI and ignoring AI-powered misinformation.
His broader message at the forum was that neither the government alone, nor the technology companies alone, can manage the fallout:
"If you expect the government officials alone to solve this, you're missing the boat. We desperately need your input and ideas and suggestions."
The Data Disconnect
Warner's 35% prediction stands in stark contrast to current CFO surveys: a recent poll found only 0.4% of roles—roughly 502,000 out of 125 million total—are expected to be eliminated by AI this year. But Warner's warning isn't about this year. It's about the compounding effect of rapid capability gains in models that are, right now, passing bar exams, writing production code, and handling customer service at scale.
The new college graduate is the canary in this particular coal mine. Entry-level roles are disproportionately vulnerable because they are precisely the kind of structured, learnable tasks that current AI systems handle best. If Warner's bet pays off—and he's explicitly inviting anyone to take the other side—the question of whether AI CEOs were being deliberately soothing will become one of the defining accountability questions of the decade.
